Unfortunately, our fireplace is in the living room, and the french doors don't let the heat out to the rest of the house. when we moved in, there was a soapstone woodburner set on ceramic tile and cement board. That sucker was heavy. The flue has a cutout for stovepipe, so it would be easy to re-run the pipe, but we wanted to use the fireplace as it was installed, (smoky joe) so we are going with an instert.

Our firebox has a rounded top, with the bricks around the box pushed out 1/2" beyond the front of the brick wall. I have tons of wood to burn, seasoned to go, but can't burn it because the damper is damaged. It has the chunk cut out, but the screw open/close mechanism is gone.
