Serious answer here. I think it is in part due to the auto workers unions digging their feet in back in the 70's when there was a big push to convert the country to the metric system. I also feel that in this arena, a lot of Americans are too lazy and stupid to grasp the system. I worked in the chemical industry for a number of years and we did everything (lab scale) using a base ten measuring system. Conversions were a piece of cake.

I'd personally like to see us go metric. Sure, it would be awkward at first but I'd get the hang of it.
