I see your issue. You haven't taken out a tape measure and found out on a XJ with an SYE there is 1/2" difference between the front and rear shafts.

Go grab a tape measure and verify that I'm never wrong then buy the complete drive shaft from Craig for $35. Otherwise I will because I need a cheap spare for my XJ with a rear with a NP231 W/SYE.
