I watched a friend trailer his rig to tellico, wheel 3 days, then blow the trans on his towrig 3 miles into the trip home leaving him stranded...his trailrig was fully operational and would have driven home.

I'm pretty sure that's about where my luck will run at some point.
But like Jim said the likely hood of that happening is far less than something happening on the trail.
I had never thought about the Uhaul idea though. I suppose if you just budgeted a couple hundred bucks extra for your trip as an insurance policy to rent one in case that happened you could do away with a tow rig. I'm not sure how happy I'd be about having to drive on of those POS for a few hundred miles though.
