I have been looking at doing this too.... from what I can gather the best way to figure out where to put the rod would be to measure the thickness of your tires bead and place it there with a little spacing..... ( I just designed a set of wheels at work and this is how I figured out where it should go, there is no standard across wheel sizes but the larger the dia of the wheel the thicker the bead seems to average)
I would also think the welding the inner side (center of wheel) of the rod would create a ramp for the bead to slide over, leave the outter ( bead side) alone this may help keep the tire in place.. it may also make it harder to get the tires off but that is the point....... IMO
I have been thining of putting two on my rims just to see if I can get my 16.5" wheels to work like every other kind of wheel. Sense Im broke and cant afford inner air locks and dont really like DIY for driveability.
