I think he would need something that he isn't slouching over and can sit more upright. I do agree that he needs to strengthen his core and drop some weight but I don't want to see him crippled for almost a year again.
I don't know his exact injury, what I do know is I have fractures in vertebrae, misalignment, screwed up si joint, etc. Stretching, exercise, and keeping my weight in check has all alleviated a lot of back pain for myself. You're only slouching on a bike if you let yourself slouch. Posture is posture.
