This is my thought process, exactly. I like to take Ron Paul as an example. He started out as an independent candidate before signing on with the Republicans. Even when he was an independent, he was gaining support. While his levels were low at first, he has built up a following. Looking at other parties and other candidates, you can slowly see the trend going from sub-1% total vote to around 10% now. It's only a matter of time before people start realizing that all it takes is voting third party for candidates to want to consider running outside of the "big two".
