did you use the `92 water pump or the old `87 one? they run in different directions. the new one doesn't have mounting bosses for an alternator. its the reverse run one you need with no bosses on the front.
another thing to check is to make sure the impeller in the pump has fins left on the it. the plate is just stamped steel the paddles rot off
All of this and also drill a 1/8th hole in the thermostat to let air purge out while filling with coolant, I have had to do this with just about every sbc I have ever owned to get the air pockets out of the system.
