Default '97 Diesel Fuel Sock (strainer)

I have a '97 GMC w/6.5L diesel with 185,000 miles. Engine was stalling due to low fuel supply to the injection pump. After I replaced the fuel lift pump, discovered fuel still not getting to filter canister. Pump checked and was working. I blew air back to the tank from the lift pump... now lots of fuel at filter canister.

Rather than pulling tank, thinking of putting an in-line filter in fuel line to trap any trash that gets sucked up due to fuel sock (strainer) being blown off the fuel pick up tube.

Question - what filter do your recommend be installed on the fuel line?
Question - should it be installed before the lift pump (suction side) or after the lift pump (pressure side)... and why?

Thanks/
