X2 on the 5.3 half ton. I tow 8,000 to 10,000 pounds with my truck quite often. I wanted a diesel too but i finally decided my truck was paid for so i put about $1000 into it to make it capable of towing heavier weights. Add a transmission cooler and buy a tuner for the gas jobs, i got the bully dog GT and it made a big difference in performance and towing MPG's. I can tow 8,000 pounds in the summer and my trans never goes over 200 to 205, in the winter i have never seen it go over 190. Keep the trans cool and it will do what you need. If you go that route make sure you either get a cluster from a 3/4 ton, get a tuner with a tranny temp gauge built in, or add a tranny temp gauge.
