if you put tons of miles on a truck(over 15k per year), diesel all the way. if you tow in the mountains often, diesel all the way. if you tow over 10k lbs often, diesel all the way. if you put on 5 to 10 k miles per year, much of it not towing anything, a gasser will be cheaper in the long run. in the old days gassers were junk after 100 to 150 k.
diesels would last 300k. it was worth it to go diesel. now gassers last alot longer than they used to. its common to see used gassers with 250k+ now. longevity is almost a non issue now days.
i drive a diesel for a living, and i wanted a gasser for weekend fun. i love my v10 ford.
the mpgs blow, but it will pull anything and is fun to drive and cheap to upkeep.
other than maintenance, the only issue i have had was a bunch of exhaust manifold studs broke.
