i've found that getting a parts truck is the best way to go on this. might cost a little $ but find a rusted out early bronco, then you steering and suspension stuff to work with. I agree just buying a 4wd is easier and probably cheaper, but what's the fun in that. I say go for it. just put some low gears in the axle and look into doubler to help engine out and you'll be fine. also, you can swap in just a divorsed tcase instead of having to swap out trans.
