I think it has to do with how much fuel it is putting into the burn chamber, mine you can get a whiff of it at start up, but then it burns pretty clean. Friend of mine has the exact same model and brand and it smells pretty bad the whole time its running.
x2 There was a thread on here a year or so ago talking about how to fix them etc... I have one I want to get tuned, so I can help the wood stove get going.
