Reid: Hispanic Voters Helped In Victory
LAS VEGAS -- Sen. Harry Reid won his fifth term in the U.S. Senate Tuesday night in large part to Hispanic voters, who overwhelming chose the Senate majority leader over tea party favorite Sharron Angle.
Reid said he knew from his internal polling that he had a larger lead than opinion polls led the public to believe. He also knew, he said, that an investment in courting the Hispanic vote would pay off.
As Reid gave his victory speech, Hispanic voters who cast their ballots for him cheered him on. During a meeting with the media Wednesday, he said he's been fostering that relationship for years.
"People have, in fact, made fun at me, saying 'Why are you wasting your time with a group that doesn't register? And if they register, they don't vote,'" he said.
But CNN exit polling revealed that 68 percent of Hispanics, who make up 15 percent of the electorate, voted for Reid.
Nevada Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen said the campaign ads by Reid's opponent, Sharron Angle, swayed Hispanic voters.
"On the other side, you have Sharron Angle, who was launching anti-immigrant commercials," he said. "(She) was basically depicting all immigrants as criminals."
The Reid campaign also credited the support of Hispanic volunteers in its get out the vote effort.
