I would start over from scratch. Pull your plugs, make sure you are absolutely positive that you are on the compression stroke on #1. And go from there. With it sneezing back thru the carb and running super rich, something is just not firing when its supposed to. I'm pretty sure if your box was bad, you would have no spark at all
