Ethanol does nothing to reduce the amount of oil we use. Ethanol requires nearly as much energy to create as it produces. So in the end, we don't use any less oil. I know your an energy man... but wouldn't production cost go down as it becomes more mainstream? Wouldn't they find more efficient ways to refine it as they have to refine more of it? I am sure when gasoline engines were first introduced gasoline wasn't all that cheap to refine either, but we have 100 years of refining it under out belts now...
