If he's not in a position to work on it himself, he should pass. Parts and service on any premium euro car are insane if you don't do it yourself, and some aftermarket parts aren't even worth putting on. You're stuck with oem on a lot of stuff.
The $800 I've thrown at my volvo in the past 7 months would have run me well over $4k if a shop were to do the same stuff. That's just suspension work and a timing belt service. The parts just for the pcv changeout was over $100.
