Crank sensor going AWOL maybe? I remember the crank sensor synched the ignition and the cam sensor (plastic distributor) took care of the injection. You can unplug the dist and i would still run but the injectors would batch fire instead of sequential.
That's one guess, hopefully I'm going in the right direction.
Edit: Ok. Here's another. The ignition control module. It's next to the coil. They can get some heat in it and it expands and the internals lose contact. It don't happen often in either case, but stranger things have happened.
