not sure what its from origanally but I think all were set up as 2wd outputs and then a divorced t-case was used for 4wd.... that said at one time this trans had an advanced adapter and dana18 behind it but I only bought the transmission when I got it. I am not sure what year GM started using them in there trucks but I think around the late 1940's and were used in everything from 1/2ton to school bus size trucks up until 1966 then they came out with the SM465....more info here http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm420.htm ........the best advantage is the ultra low 1st gear and the small compact size for short wheelbase it is a real good choice....
