if the brake booster was bad the pedal would be hard to push on with it running. sounds like the master cylinder might have dirt in it causing the compensating port inside to get stuck in the open position letting brake pressure escape back to the reservoir. i would flush all the brake fluid out of the car and see if that helps. brake fluid is one of those things no one changes. i always flush a brake system every 2 years.
