Default 289v8 rebuild

I am planning on rebuilding a 289v8 out of a 63-64 Ford. It ran great but has high miles and smokes. It currently has an aftermarket cam and lifters as well as rockers and springs. Im looking to rebuild the whole engine, and put a different cam in it.

Any tips on what cam to run and some good ways to get some power? I have some ideas already but id like to hear other peoples opinions. Im not really looking to make a stroker out of it due to costs. Thanks.
