the longer the zoom lens, the worse they are in low light. More glass = less light transition. The best low light lenses are fixed focal length. They are also the sharpest.
That being said, just get a 200-300 P&S that is small enough for you to take everywhere you go w/ your 9 mo old. You get much better pics of your kid with a cheap p&s that you have with you at all times than an inconvenient complicated slr that you leave at home and never use.
Canon ELPH is my recommendation.
