The 700R4 and the 4L60E are prety much the same tranny. GM just re designated it the 4L60 (non eletronic shift) ,then came the 4L60E (eletronic shift).
a 4l60e is a better trans than a 7004r, his engine is already going to have the pcm support and wiring for the electronic trans so there is no reason to take a step back. electronic controlled powertrain components are far superior to the old stuff. just think... if he does it right he can have a 2 position trans calibration that changes shift firmness, shift points and also torque converter lockup points.
someday I'll be running a 6l80 or 6l90 in my vehicle....push button gear changes and converter lockup... it can make any any trans seem inferior once you tune it properly... full auto or full manual with the flick of a button.
