Go for the 5.3 and use the extra money to upgrade cam and valvesprings. Then you'll be making LS1 power with a stronger iron block, and later on once you get bored you can bore it out and throw stock LS1 pistons in it. That'll give you LS1 displacement (346ci)with around 11:1 compression due to the smaller chambers on the 5.3 heads, and with a good cam you can easily put out 400+hp.
