My understanding is that this is a electric T-case. If he had a manual 1354 T-case he could just stick the T-case in neutral and forget about it, which can be swapped in with little difficulty. The nice thing about the Ranger T-cases is that they're all interchangeable with each other. He would need the later version, while not super common, there are manual 1354's out there. The difference between the new and old is basically just the front output, the older having a slip yoke, while the newer being fixed yoke.

The hubs shouldn't make a difference. Either will function as normal as far as towing is concerned.

I really don't have any info better than what was posted.

Building an electrical thingamajig to stick it in neutral from scratch will likely be far more trouble than just unbolting the rear driveshaft.

The front driveshaft shouldn't matter.
