Some quotes from a buddy who tows a modded Toyota pickup. If you have any questions for him let me know.

I tow with a 02 ram 1500 with a 4.7 with 3.50 gears. I'm at max capacity now. If it had the 3.90's I dont think any of my complaints would be a issue. Before the tons and cage and new body I had no issue's though.

You NEED a WD with a 1/2 ton. I towed without it and it sucked. My rig and trailer weigh almost as much as my tow rig now and once its moving you dont know it back there.

I have actually been kicking around buying a hemi 1/2 or 3/4 ton with the lower gears to replace my rig. I was looking into the tundra but it WAYYYY over priced.
Hauling to RC I get around 10. Trip to tellico I got 11.5 round trip. Around town I got between 12.5 and 13 normally. If I baby it I might get 14.
... I'm fine to tow just my rig. Add in food, tools camp stuff ect for me and 1 other with some firewood and that truck hates me. Oh and I use a WD setup and a sway controller.

Keep a eye on gearing. Anything under a 3.50ish gear isnt that good for towing. Seems 3.73-4.11 work well in most trucks.
