There is one thing you can do, but Fred's point about pushing the front drivetrain still applies. You can swap in a NP242 for your 249. They were available in ZJ's via special order I believe? Either way, its becoming a popular swap not just because you get a 2wd option and still have the full-time option, but because its an alternative to the costly viscous coupling replacement in the NP249. I am not 100% certain, but you may not even have to disturb your center console. Ask Danno - he's done it in a ZJ.
