Default 4cyl/6cyl diff differences

I was just in the axle tech section and saw a post that said 4cyl gears can be made to fit on a 6cyl carrier. I pulled diff from my 4runner and the carrier was chewed up a little. Lost some teeth off the pinion gear on the way to Sno-Blind. I was digging thru my pile of parts and found what I think is a 6cyl posi diff. There is some problem at the pinion bearing area I think crush sleeve not sure. Unfortunately I just ordered a 4.56 gear set for a 4cyl from the R & P shop and picked up a master install kit 4 a cyl from DTS all with Sno-Blind prizes (thanks Elaine). How hard is it to install the 4cyl gears on a 6cyl carrier? Do I need to take the install kit back and get one for a 6cyl?
I have another 6 cyl 4.56 posi diff for the front. I stuffed a 4.37 diff from an 80 p'up in it yesterday to get it back on the road and have the matching one for the front but they are both open. I am looking to build something I can drive anywhere and wheel mild trails. I already have 3 trucks with lockers and want something a little more street friendly. At what tire size do I have to start worrying about breaking birfields? Motor is stock 22re I am thinking of running 32 or 33 if it will turn 33's.
