What kind of rules, or who's do you like to run best? What is the most fair for everyone, or yourself? What makes you race at one place over another? Why do those of you that go to play bogg's that don't go to competitions? or the other way around?

Which rules do you like mikey? I think that we have to just decide now that there is getting to be more mud runs which style we want to run. The back yard runs are more fun but the moms are are well put togather and seem to run a little smoother and you basically know what your payback is going to be. Next year i plan to race more of the moms races if he has as many as he say's. Nice run Sunday Mikey!!

Well I mostly like rules that favor my jeep to win. :bdr2: I am with you and Basil on liking organization and consistancy. I also think some places rules are just way too complicated. Set payback or % is fine...but don't ever think a racer is gonna be enthused about running for chump change. I also think trophies are a must. I like points series also. Another big topic of late has been cut tires, yay or nay???? My least favorite rules are: the ones that segregate light vehicles from heavy. What ever happend to run what brung and hope ya brung enough!

Great questions Mikey! I was going to answer them, but I'm not sure how. Think for now I'll just watch this thread. I hope everyone puts their thoughts in. As many of you know, I'm trying to help bring back the competition bogs (and keep the play bogs going!) at the Ice Carnival grounds in Albright Shores. What the drivers think and want is something anyone holding races or play bogs need to know.

that's a tuff one some, someone like myself that puts on a mud run we try are best to keep things organized and try to keep inproving each year moms does a good job they have been doing what they do for a lot of years. it's hard to say what the best rules are we try to keep it inexpensive to come to are event so the hole family can come along and not brake the bank in order to do that you have to watch what you send on trophy equipment ect, if you start having to many classes the money needs to goes up . i try to keep the classes as fare as i can but you can't please every one all the time i run my classes on how many intries in that class for pay out and it seems to work well by us but may be not some where else so it's hard tosay what's better all i no it the more mud runs around the better for all wheather it's comp or free for all as long as safety comes first and organization comes second someone can put on a good mud run big, small backyard or full blown event there all a great time . i my self will keep trying to inpove dad's mud run until it's one the the best placed to run in michigan and with out the help from freinds and family that wouldn't happen .a run can only be as good as the people who help put it on where ever it may be . good luck to all as drivers and event holders.

We stopped running at Albright when they made major changes to the rules. The one that I really dont like or understand is why you have to have a complete working dash?? We would have to put a scatter shield on the tranny (that one is fine) and put a "dog house" over the rad that is mounted in the box of the truck (once again, I can deal with that) but the full working dash is never gonna happen.... We would love to get back into running but until the full working dash rule is taken away, we will just run play bogs..

We did run our xj in the street class at the Clare County Fair. The thing the p'ed me off with the people running the bog is they didn't check tire size.. We were in the 33 and under class and got beat by a guy running 36's... Only for a trophy but still..

I am warming up the the rule of run what you got. Besides that i think that our rules around here are ok if we start ruling them up nobody will show up. If you don't like the rules where there is a mud run DON'T go! Look at the Freemont Fair run, they didn't rule it up and look how much fun that was! Besides for the pit being a hill in the hole. But keep in mind that you can't take the saftey rules away. Without them well you know what could happen!

I hear what your saying Matt...I am a fan of tire classes and run what ya brung myself. It just seems to me we'll lose guys like careless that don't have a fair stock class.
My next statement would include my jeep too..there are also rigs that run in "pro street" type classes that are borderline. Some of things we run against now-a-days are 4-linked, coil overed, Proffesionally cut tires, racing wheels. Like I said I am by no means a victim. We will just lose racers because they are not compettitve. I hear a-lot of guys say they don't care, and the race for fun. For me I can-not grasp that concept, I do not like getting beat. I'll just not race case and point 2010 I only went 6 times.
Look at moms rules..great safety and fair but zero participants. I've raced with them for twenty years and still like it, but I can't remember when they filled up a class w/25 trucks? It just seems to me simple is better. Factory Street class>Pro street w/33,36,40,44>Super(4link,stripped & gutted, cuts) w/ 36, 44>Open class no performance limiting Rules.

5 class's
1) Stock no headers, no gutting, complete streetable vechicle. no nitrous, no blowers etc.
2)33" and down DOT
3) 35" and down but must have at least 2 35" tires
4) 38" " " " " " " 2 38" tires
5) 44" " " " " " " 44" tires
No cuts
No 4 link
No alcohal
No coil overs
No aftermarket transfer cases
No fiberglass racing bodies
Any motor
Any tranmission
Maybe 2 class's in here with cut tires only same rules as above 36" down and 44" down

6) Open anything goes
This is pretty much the way it was a long time ago and maybe it is time to go back that direction. Just my humble opinion off course.

This is definitly a tough subject. I also felt the heat from a few of these topics throughout the year.. Personally I think rules suck:beerbang: Too many rules make things difficult.. Creating more classes is not really the answer either. But at the same time we do need to try to keep things fair for everyone. Otherwise we will find ourselves with no where to run. I also think that a lot of people are taking things way too seriously, and forgetting what we are all there for in the first place. TO HAVE FUN! I didn't build a new truck this season to kick ass. I did it for the rush. And too fast is still never enough right? So where do you draw the line. A guy like me with a small block can't run nitrous in a class, but if I go to moms I have to run my small block up against big blocks with twice the power I have just because I have aluminum heads.. If you ask me what is one rule that I dissagree with it is this. I would consider more moms runs if this rule was not in place. If you can't afford a twenty to thirty thousand dollar engine, why cant we run nitrous.. Or why do aluminum heads bump you when everyone knows that cast iron and aluminum are equal when it comes to power.. I am not looking to run nitrous all of the time, only stating that no matter who you are, and no matter how fast you run, there is always something to bitch about...Guys complain about things that they think will personally benefit them, right? So who is right and who is wrong... So I know that we need to come up with a way to keep things fair. But how is the question. If cut tires become an issue, the guys who have cut their tires because they cannot afford new tires will be screwed.. Four link is definitly questionable... Ok, enough for now.. But I want everyone to remember that we are all out there to have fun, and enjoy being around the group of people thats there in the first place.. Lets keep this rolling!

"Strokedinthemud" I agree with you on the aluminum head thing. Cut tires really were never allowed in any class but open til the last couple years. At least not full blown racing cuts. The guys with wore out tires that were cut always had that issue with cuts. They were basicilly never allowed but some times were voted on the day of the race to see if they could run. Personally I do not care what size motor is run. 1400HP has to get to the ground and with no linked suspension or cut tires that becomes much more difficult. I have no problem with running my 350HP sbc chevy against them if everything else is somewhat equal.

I use to run a few years back when it was fun. Had a 4 banger with 42" tires, I was there because it was fun. Go ahead and park you truck Matt, trust me you won't be missed by the spectators, they Don't come to just see you. What do you race for, them, cash, the rush, fun? You guys get to technical sometimes, unless you check every vehicle from top to bottom you should just run tire class. Really what is this about, what you can build or how much cash you have to spend? Good luck with pleasing everyone, just remember "KISS", "Keep It Simple Stupid". Tried to just add my .02 but guess I may have went over budget by a nickel, so thats my .07

#24 ·
Can never please everyone. Big thing is payback. You have a big payback and the trucks will come no matter the rules. Lots of trucks=lots of spectators.

I ran at the TAMR Millington show this year and there was 50 trucks in bog 4 with 100% payback plus an additional few hundred put up by the club.

#26 ·
I like that John.. I guess that is what I would have like to have said yesterday.. "KISS" We do not want to make things so difficult that we have to spend three hours teching all of the trucks before we can even play.. Creat a new class so some people can be competetive maybe.. But if only rule changes are made, people will adapt to the new rules, we will still have the same probelms and complaints as before, and be right back in the same place again.

#27 ·
Many good points but, I have to agree with keeping it simple. I built my truck for moms pro street rules but seldom have the chance to run there so I run where the mud is:thumb: I don't like running my factory suspension/engine location against linked trucks with coil overs and set back engines but its all part of the game.

In My perfect world there would be,

Factory, Lift and tires the only mod.

Pro street, Engine mods, fender trimming, Factory suspension/location.

Mod, Run what you brung.

Well what ever the rules i will still race, Just would like them figured out so that we can modify to the right class. If rule changes are made i think that we will still have the same problem and the same people will be racing against each other Thus being said we will go thourgh this again next year. I think that the KISS rule would be the better and faster way to put on a show heck look at the show that most of us went to this fall in Freemont tons of trucks and a couple thousand spectators THAT WAS FUN!!! Just my 2cents again.

well...

As far as money goes no-body dislikes it! Say what you may...

Simple is better, which what I suggested too.

Parking your ride does work, been there done that. More than once. Not running my Pro-street ride against a superstock/mod type. It is neither fun or practical. It is not an arrogance thing it is a choice. What few races I have attended this year I noticed that I am not the only one. The mods that have been "allowed" are substantial performance enhancements. Heck for a long time a slapper bar was the only kind of traction device that was allowed. Like I said b4 some people race for fun, and some to win. Who cares; everyone does it for their own reasons. The places that put on races should be appreciated. The people who run them also need to appreciate the input they solicit. Whether it is tough to swallow or not. More is better, nobody wants to race with only 3 other trucks. So lets figure it out instead of throwing darts. The freemont run was quite fascinating , there is only one other race I heard of all year that many trucks, and boy those rules were as basic as it gets.

At our shows each vehicle is teched in by an officail.
For the first time in history, at the Sand Lake race 'WE' did not. However, Tim Bunker and his crew were responsible for teching at his race in Sand Lake.

Our rules have never allowed alcohol in any mud bog, only mud drag racing. And believe me, you can smell alcohol burning, no one was burning it.

As is stressed at the drivers meeting. If you think something is wrong, bring it up THEN.

I like run what ya brung rules ie fowler farms no alchol or nitrous in tire classes other than that any thing goes the only class i thought should have more rules was street tire those buggys & bad az jeeps chased a lot of real street trucks away on drag side ive seen 4.0 jeep chorakee win class when every other truck in class went out of bounds ive seen bone stock 318 on bald 31s take 1st in 4 tire classes in 1 day there were a lot of trucks well north of 600 hp in those classes ive seen chevota02 die in middle of pit restart blow pit and still placed in that class my girlfriends truck is tube frame bbc with alum heads gets beat by near stock trucks how many times have you seen racing jason be fastest truck and not place because he went out of bounds always a good show but still | places i wont go ? fellow racer tells me a bog has foot or more of standing water im not going ! i think we lost cool place to race in battle creek by not enough support was a cool park JMO:bdr2:

Stock should mean "STOCK" not engine upgrade, axles, mufflers, etc. up to 33" tires.
Modified......up to 36" tires w/ engines upgrade, axles, open exhaust.
Super mod...38" and up tires w/ Power adder
Umlimited.....Cut tires anything go's hope ya brung enough

I also think they should split jeeps and other vehicles up!

#47 ·
Ahh the age old "Jeep Thing" can't beat em Join em!

Some place have done that , all it did was split the money up even farther. Not to mention I have been beat by plenty of good running trucks...I understand your point. As far as your rules, you would find that tire size doesn't equate to the amount of mods. It would probhably complicate things more.

#50 ·
Ya I for sure would reather run my jeep against jeeps than adrenaline or twisted too. I will let you truck guys run against them. I like stock is stock but who calls those shots. Did your truck come with a BBC opr SBC and how is anyone ever going to make those decisions. Why say 33" tires and not 30" that is closer to what stock trucks came with. Also than how about no agressive mud terrian tires. Very few came stock with them. Where will that end? PS I really still like Boyne Falls and believe that putting a circle in the track reallly makes things more fair. I do think the payback could use some adjustm, ent but only in the fact that I think the class with the most trucks should pay the most.

I know this isn't mud running but it is 4x4 racing nonetheless, this is where guys are going who used to race in the mud. Many reasons, but most of all you get more seat time. This race was 4 hours long and no bitching\crying\wining about who has what for tires\motor\body\no body and so forth. I think if you don't settle on some common ground you'll lose even more drivers to this type of racing. Did I mention it was fun!

Hope you guys figure it all out, I do enjoy going to the local mud runs. Love watching the newbies as well as Tim with his Ford, Twisted Too. I would love to see Henry with Adrenaline at Racing Jason's this summer or at Dad's mud run as well. Good Luck.

I think the new "step it up" deal has a lot of potential. Personally I liked the looks of it and am sure that if all works outr next year I will participate. But like most mud runners I am not even remoterly setup to do turns and even jumps for that matter. I did have another jeep that was ready to go and had I realized/known that it was going to more based on a course than a straight shot I may very well of had that one there. Just not really ready to overheat the motor in the mud jeep and there in lays part of the whole problem. It is tough to do boith with one jeep and that becomes the problem with local/stock guys. They need the vechicles for everything and want a class that they can still have a chance in. I understand that but really do not have an answer to how that can be accomplished.
