im not sure if it really is my flexplate. its worn, but its not in need of a replacement, no teeth missing, and it has plenty of gear life left .
what would cause the starter to just spin?
it worked off and on, then just started spinning without engaging?
is that a neutral safety switch? or something else?
any advice is good for me
the starter is brand new. (and it does the same thing as my old one)
possible causes ive heard mentioned to me:
1. wiring is bad, causing it to activate sometimes and not other time
2. animal from the muppets has taken the "go" out of my truck
3. something in the column isnt doing what it should (see my post a long time ago about jiggling the shifter to start)
4. Bad solenoid
bad starter solenoid would do it i donno if you have one on the firewall or not. but my starter did this it would just sit and spin wouldnt shoot out got a new one and its fixed. have it tested at autozone or somewere frist before you get a new one.
also it might not be close enogh to the fly wheel. we put a brand new starter on my buddys trans am and we didnt have it close enogh to the fly wheel it just sat there an spun.
no. a starter solenoid would cause the starter to not do anything. if it is spinning then the starter has an issue. the solenoids only job is to apply power to the starter.
yeah hook up a battery charger to it to see if it comes out and spins if it does then your alignment on the starter to flywheel is not right. if it came with shims make sure you used them.
ive had issues with it starting before..like it wouldnt even turn over unless i pulled/pushed/moved the shifter around a little bit.. i dont know how to describe the symptoms any better..i dont think my starter has any shims on it, and it looks just like the old one (which has the same issue, making me believe its not the starter itself but a solenoid) but that would not explain the grinding
the weird thing is: when i tried to start it immediately after installing the new starter it worked better than great for like 5 starts..then it did what i said above..
as well the teeth on the starter were chewed up. And the DTR (Nuetral safety) intermitently wasn't sending the signal to even try and crank it.
And the shift cable was bad, wasn't allowing it to shift into any forward gears.
