Is there a trustworthy place to donate old computers or am I better off smashing them and throwing them away? Looking for something close between Livonia and Milford.
I'm not aware of a specific place in that area, but one thought is to check with a company that repairs computers. They may at least be able to take out the hard drive and destroy it for you and ideally be able to have the rest recycled?
Best buy takes them for recycle. I would pull the hard drives out and destroy them separately though. Who knows if the geek squad would try to watch all your home made single person pornos on them.
Our local Goodwill store takes them and has a crew that disassembles everything for proper recycling. Keeps the harmful junk out of the landfill and puts people to work that would otherwise have difficulty finding jobs.
Make sure a big magnet makes friends with your hard drive first
it'll nuke the hdd to military spec if desired. then pull it and dismantle it with a big freaking hammer, fire and/or acid.
unless you replace your old crap sooner than most, your old crap probably is not worth the donation. I place my remnants at the curb and they magically disappear.
I wait until I get a skid at a time of old PC's then Goodwill typically comes and picks them up for free. Like others have mentioned, I pull the drives and drill holes in them..
I wouldn't rely on just data erasure. I would physically destroy the drive. You'd be surprised what you can recover. A drill bit through the platters usually suffices.
Took care of it. Took the drive out of the main computer I was concerned about. Even though there is nothing very interesting on it. Gave the rest to Canton Computers in Livonia. These kids assured me my info would be safely destroyed. LOL I'm sure they are scouring everything they can for any nudy pics or vdo's that I don't have. Heck, I would if I were them. :sonicjay:
If the HD is a decent size, I just put it in an enclosure and use it like a big ass USB stick.
