Just got my Cummins back together after forever.... Needed a head gasket. Had head cleaned up, all new gaskets, new head bolts, etc.....
Starts fine, and runs fine(above idle), but seems like it's idling rough, and is blowing smoke(at idle). Check engine light was on this morning on my way to work....it's off now.
Where should I begin my investigation?
You can buy a fuel pressure gauge most anywhere for not much....you need to plumb it into the supply side either right at or just before the injection pump. The lift pump which is responsible for moving fuel from the tank to the injection pump is known to be a junk setup on these trucks....hence the popularity of the fass/airdog setups
Fuel pressure is important because the injection pump uses fuel for internal lubrication. Without good fuel pressure the pump will burn up fast. Dodge spec is like 5psi.....10-15psi is better.
IF you put the connection right at the injection pump, be sure to buy a fuel pressure snubber. It keeps the injection pump lil pressure spikes from ruining your new qauge.
Took 3 guages for me to figure that out.
:banghead:
Oh yeah.....should probably mention I have a FASS 150.
Oh yeah.....again.....I just resurrected an older thread on the Cummins forum from a guy with almost the exact same problem without the smoke, after installing new injectors.
Maybe a little preemptive, but...got the valves adjusted, and killed the batteries in the process(left the key on[maybe reset the computer?]), and viola! It's running great so far. Beat on it last night, and this morning and it still seems ok.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
