I'll try dragging a tire on the ground. Ive put 50 pounds of torque on the pinion (14 bolt setup "bible" recommends that much) and it just won't leave a good pattern.
Used gear set patterns are always a crap shoot. I would not expect a great pattern and live with good. You did settle for used stuff.
Looks like you need to move the pinion away from the CL (more shim) then readjust your backlash.
Proper bearing preload will usually create a decent impression. I use a box wrench on a ring gear bolt to turn the carrier and let the pinion bearing preload create the load with great success.
I hope this helps.
Going to try and tackle it again this weekend. I'm assuming I'm going to have to keep shimming it out and adjusting backlash, then checking the pattern.
I would be happy settling for a non-perfect pattern, just trying to make the best out of what i have. Got a really good deal on the front and rear gears, and the right carriers (original was toast on 14 bolt)
Also had machine work done to 14 bolt ring gear and didn't want to risk screwing up a new one.
Are you just winging it or do you have the ideal spec in front of you? There are ideal numbers for you to reference from. Typically you start with that standered number and work either forward or back. I know Randy's ring and pinion has a great book out there all about gears and diffs! I used it when set my gears up.
I would try to shim the pinion away from the carrier .010 or .015 thousandths and re-check it. The best way to setup used gears is to check the pattern and backlash before pulling the gears out to swap into another axle. Most people cant do this because they just have the gears and not the whole alxe
Pulled the axle so i'm going to set up the gears out of the vehicle. Whole process has been a pain in the ass so far. I shimed the pinion out further but i still have to re-adjust backlash and check the pattern Again. Once i get to that ill put up some more pictures.
Looked at randy's, didn't see the book but found a yukon install guide.
I don't have an ideal number or know where to find it.
I had to set the backlash on a old corporate axle, 9'' rear end style and had the backlash a .015 for it to be runnable. Good thing with used gears and 14bolts are that they are cheap
Did you move the pinion away from the carrier? How much did you move it? Backlash is way to tight for a used gears. I would set it up at a minimum of .010 backlash being thats its a worn gear and im PRETTY sure it would have never been adjusted before in the housing it was originally in. The pinion still needs to move away from the carrier still though.
Dont get fed up with it yet. After getting the pattern right you still need to get the pinion and the carrier preload right. Did you swap the pinion from the used stuff or use the whole pinion and pinion carrier?. Its a learning process for sure
Moved it back .0015 from the original for that picture. Ill move it out a little more when i get the time
The pinon carrier is rebuilt, all new bearings with the pinion and ring gear and carrier were out of another housing.
I really appreciate the help, and yes definitely a learning process.
Wow, dont seem like its getting better. How much do you have the pinion shimmed out so far? Wonder if the other side looks better at all?
