I don't remember them getting this big?

I noticed over the last couple years, I've been seeing more and more of these big mosquitos showing up. Before, I'd never seen any that were much bigger than the size of a pea. But now, I can go out in the yard and see these guys flying around everywhere. And they aren't just the big leg look-a-likes that don't bite, I swatted this bastard off my shoulder after I felt that little sting.

Are these a common sight for anyone else? I feel like I'm going to get a super strain of malaria from these guys.

I heard it was from the nuclear plant meltdown in Japan. The radiation caused mosquitos to get bigger and there are even reports that large swarms of giant mosquitos have attacked and killed birds.

Were you waxing the dog poo or washing it or both?

I just had my first encounter with the giant mosquitoes. I thought a spider was on my arm at first. The one that I swatted was just slightly bigger than the one that you posted. Once I realized that It was a mosquito, I sprayed myself with some deep woods off and checked them out some more. There are a bunch of them flying around my brother's back yard in Clarkston, near some wetlands. They seem to be more aggressive than the smaller ones too

I had never seen those until yesterday. I was at the Ann Arbor airport for a couple hours and as soon as I touched the grass a couple dozen of them woke up and came after us. Bastards were relentless, way bigger and way more persistant than normal mosquito's. I haven't seen any at home in Highland yesterday, but last night I was getting attacked by about 3x as many of the normal sized ones. I HATE MOSQUITOS!!!!

ANN ARBOR — Some big mosquitoes tough enough to bite through canvas shorts are showing up in force in parts of Michigan this summer.

Psorophora ciliata has been spotted in Washtenaw County amid a general boom in the mosquito population.

Ann Arbor resident Ken Clark and his family noticed the big mosquitoes at their 10-acre plot of farmland in nearby Chelsea on Sunday. Clark says the bites are "like a stab" - not quite like being stung by a yellow jacket, but worse than your average mosquito bite.

Michigan State University entomologist Mike Kaufman says Psorophora ciliata is native to Michigan but doesn't thrive every year. The current appearance of this big biter is credited to recent weather that's included heavy rains followed by dry spells.
