O2 Sensor question

had issues with my cat and O2 sensor (after cat) so I unpluged the sensor and replaced the whole mess with a piece of pipe, Read couldn't afford proper fix, so now I'm getting some work done (head gasket)and I'm being told that even if I dont have a cat I still need the O2 sensor to make my truck run right. I don't have the original sensor so my question is will I be any better off buying the sensor and hooking it up without the cat than I am with the pigtail taped off and tucked away?

btw this is on a 97 2.2 S-10

Do you still have the pre cat sensor hooked up?

Do you know if you have a pre and post cat o2 sensor?

Sounds like you have a pre and a post cat sensor, Even if you instal the post cat sensor into the exhaust, you will always have a check engine light since the motor thinks your CAT has failed.

However, if you still have the pre cat sensor hooked up, I *think* the engine will run right, except for the CEL

yes, the pre cat sensor is hooked up, working

yes, there are two sensors

I dont care if the light is on just wanted to know if having the sensor in place with out the cat is better than not having one at all(old sensor is gone ,unplugged, wiring taped and tucked up on the crossmember)

...UPDATE...

ponied up the $79.99 and bought the sensor and O2 bung and had it welded in, so far no light, will have to wait and see if it comes back, it took almost two weeks for the light when I removed it in the first place so...
