Why do alcohol and hydroxyl groups use the same two atoms but behave differently. Why does an oxygen atom get so pissed off and want to explode if you use it to connect two ethyl groups?

My guess is how they electrons are exchanged in the orbitals that make them behave differently.

Another thing, I understand how and electron can move around in the S orbital but P and D orbitals confuse me.
