The check engine light came on a few days ago after an oil change , I am not relating the two, or I hope not, I will have my tools tomorrow, its at my GF's house Thanks so far for everyones help
Turn the key to the on position without starting, you should get a check engine light for about 3 seconds and the fuel pump should run for 2 seconds or so.
If you have no cel/fuel pump/spark your pcm isn't getting power.
If you get a cel and fuel pump runs but no spark its probably ckps/cps issue.
The above applies to obd1, I think the obd2 is setup the same way. I'm sure someone here can confirm.
Its a 97 i dont have away to check codes guess maybe the coil, hate to keep buying crap if it dont need it put some starter fluid to it also ,nothing , checked all grounds also.
Turn the key on and off 3 times. The engine light will flash the code, count the flashes and let me know I will look them up for you, also check to see if you have power at the coil connector while some one cranks the engine.
did you even check for spark or just start swapping parts? If you haven't yet checked for spark, do that first. just pull a plug wire and get an extra plug or a spark tool. if no spark, check the coil plug. One wire will be 12v+ with key on and the second should be - pulse while cranking. If you get no spark and the end of the spark plug wire but - pulse at the coil plug, chances are your coil is bad. Before swapping coils, check the wire from the coil to the distributer. If the wire is good, than chances are your coil is bad. If you do not get 12v+ at the coil plug, than you have a short somewhere on that wire you need to find.
If you do not get - pulse at the coil plug when cranking, you need a scan tool that can give you a live feed of the crank/cam signal to make sure they are working fine. Basically there is a few things you can do to actually diagnose the problem instead of just throwing parts at it.
Did this, and it lit up the shift light and cruse light, this xj dont have either, then the odometer went 9999999,8888888,7777777,down to zeros the just showed the mileage, the all lights went off and check engine lit back up ??
First off cycle the ignition key 3 times on off on off on check engine light will start to flash count the flashes, their will be a pause and then more flashes.that will give you the code
Still showing code 54 got another pickup coil still no fire, maybe the main coil its self?
