Ive been running one in my tj for over a year now as a dd and its fine. i would maybe be worried in the snow it might slide around being locked in the front.
Yea i havent drove mine in the snow but i know it drives horrible on dry roads in four wheel drive but it drives fine in two wheel drive your best bet would prolly be a tru trac unit
i gotta drive thru everything with my job.. if roads are shut down i still have to go thru it all, so just looking to beef things up a bit for the winter..should i rule out a locker for my rear?
Recommend anything kinda on a budget already doing a motor swap plus the gears so moneys a little tight but there is some room.. first time buying lockers for my rig
I would recommend Detroit True Tracs in both axles. They are good in the snow and is what I am running. I had them in my WJ in both axles and could not be stopped in the snow, really loved them.
Fyi If you actually wheel it you will be greatly disappointed with any sort of limited slip.
And I know of lots of people who DD with lunch boxes in the front with no ill side affects, myself included. However when a lunch box is installed in a rear application it can be tricky to drive at first, but with in a week your passengers will never know the difference.
I like and am currently running Spartans myself. Much smoother than any Aussie or Lockright that I've experienced. As for longevity, I've noticed that Aussies and Lockrights both have around a 2 year life span in a DD/wheeler. No long term experience in a dd for a Spartan yet.
One more thing, Take a long hard look at installing deeper gears than 4.10's. Cost is the same for all the gear sets and you don't want to have to do it twice. Check out RMS in my sig for locker and gear needs, or Unlimited Offroad if you need anything installed :thumb:
"lunch box" lockers were what i was thinking about doing.
as far as gears i was told any bigger and i would loose a lot of mpg, being that i drive 100+ highway miles a day i don't wanna totally kill my mileage
I can second the vote for spartan lockers, have installed both Spartans and lock right lockers, the spartan pins are bigger and stronger and in my opinion easier to install. As for driving with a lunchbox that is up to your preference, I've had one in the rear of my dd tj for 2 years and didn't mind a bit, you just have to understand that the rear end may step out on you a bit easier. In deep snow the lockers are awesome. I now have Spartans in the front and rear of my dd tj, but I do have lockouts as well.
Aussie Aussie Aussie! No tire size limit or horse power limit stipulated in warranty, this tells me they have confidence in there on product. Spartan Dana 30 locker states a 32" tire max..... Just like the old Detroit EZ Locker, and look how that turned out. Also order a hardened cross shaft and new thrust washers with the Aussie, it's just good insurance and will insure a seamless problem free install.
I had the Detroit easy locker. Loved it, but broke stuff in it so I shelved. Installed a true trac. Loved it till I realized my front axle won't climb a boulder with one tire
I also have a shelved EZ locker, Mine just refused to work. I don't think it's wore out or anything just a turd from day one. I called Eaton and they basically told me I had an expensive paperweight.
I have a Bronco II running 8.8 rear/Dana 35 front. 4.0L OHC w/ built A4LD. I've had Aussie in the rear for 3 years and wouldn't trade for love nor money. Yes they will step out on occasion, but nothing serious. Bottom line, this unit has never failed me, and I've gone some serious 4 wheeling with it. Highly recommended and the price is right!
BTW, I do plan to score a front Aussie for my Dana 35 TTB. (XD-13527) I have lock outs so if there is an issue I can isolate the front end.
