I have seen a few styles of aftermarket bumpers on 3rd generation Rams and decided to build one for my 06. Why build you ask, #1 I'm a cheap skate, #2 I like to build things:beerbang:
Center section and mounting brackets will be made out of 1/4" while I don't plan to winch with it I do want it strong enough to use for recovery if need be. The rest will be 10ga or 1/8", I would rather make it out of 3/16" but this is only a 1/2 ton truck and I didn't want to hang too much weight up front. Plan to cut in and recess a couple of fog lights in the bumper, and mount 3 6" Hellas on top of the bumper topped off with a Baja style bar to protect them.
now for the pics.
1. mounting plates.
2. center shape.
3. center shape done.
4. added braces and started flaring back up under the headlight.
welded the gussets before I couldn't get to them any more and added a brace just so the ears would somewhat hold their shape during fitup
boxing it in
getting there
mocking up the outsides
with metal instead of cardboard:beerbang:
drivers side done
as I was cutting pieces for the drivers side I cut some for the passenger side also, so the second side went very quickly. The passenger side is about 1/4" lower than the drivers side, so tomarrow I'll tweak that and cut the ends off and make caps for them.
This has been a fun build, when I'm finished with the front I plan to make a rear also. To finish the front I have to cut off ends and make caps, cut in some fog lights, add a "baja" bar, mount some KC's and add recovery points. Still debating on a coating for it, I am torn between powder coat and spray on bedliner, I am leaning toward the bedliner only because I want to do my nerf bars also and I think the bedliner would be more durable....but who knows?
first one is all finished loaded up to get coating quotes
second is all sandblasted for powder coat
last is a teaser shot outdoors without lights or recovery points
LOL that's just funny, there is a 2nd generation ram running arround here with a channel iron bumper....if I ever see it up close I'll get a pic for the booty fab LOL
Yeah, it was kind of a mix between the Road Armor and Fab Fours, I took the design points I liked from both and came up with what I have now. Looking forward to getting to the rear this winter:beerbang:
and I too wish it was a Cummins.....mabey next truck???
thanks for all the comments guys!
