86 4runner questions

I just picked up an 86 4runner from a guy who knows nothing about its history. Here is what I have found so far.

The tag on the fire wall says 22r-EC but it has a 22r in it. The wiring is a mess and I have been trying to clean it up to find out what I need. Nearly every sensor has been cut and I have a mess of wires that I am trying to re run. Here are the wires I have that are cut followed by some pictures. I would like to know what wires I need and what wires I can just tape off. These are all coming from the chassis wire harness.

-Black wire yellow stripe
-Yellow wire
-Green wire white stripe
-Brown wire black stripe
-Yellow wire green stripe
-Green wire red stripe
-Green wire

-Plug with blue wire black stripe and white wire black stripe
-Plug with brown wire, red wire and white wire

Lots of fun buddy. This is only the beginning. I have vacuum hoses I'm working on too. Also trying to figure out the suspension. From what I understand they changed to IFS in 86 so someone must have done a SAS. Everything looks good except for the 10" shackles and the home made front drive shaft. Rear shocks are disconnected in the rear (Looks like the lower bolts are gone. Going to be an interesting winter project that's for sure. Has 4.88's and running on 35's. Definitely going to lower it and re do the suspension. Was thinking about a nice TSL 33". I bought it from my brother in law. He was driving this thing 60 down the high way lol.

Wow , that does look like fun ! I have a 86 runner, it also has the 22 re and sas . The 22r is carbed right ? General yota has a carbed truck he might be able to help you out on the wires and vac lines. He is a really nice guy and a very talented mechanic. My truck is on 40's and I drive it on the road at highway speeds a lot.:sonicjay: if the sas is done right it will ride like a Cadillac and drive nice, even with large tires. I wouldn't want to drive my runner as a daily with 40's but I would with 38's. I still get 15 mpg:sonicjay:

What gears do you have? I have some 38.5's I was thinking about running but haven't decided to go smaller or bigger yet.

When I picked it up I towed it home. He told me the fuel pump was bad and he could not get it to run. Said it just died one day on the highway and could not get it to start again. I tested the dead battery after charging it and was toast. Also tested he alternator which turned out to be bad as well. Guessing the power steering leak I fixed ruined the alternator and killed the battery. Ran to the auto parts store, picked up a new battery and a stock alternator (had a gm one half assed in there) she fired up and ran great. Major problem solved.

So here is another question. Since in 86 they switched to IFS and this has a solid axle I was looking over the frame up front where they would have cut all the IFS off and where they would have welded everything on for the SAS. I am kind of confused because the frame is clean and looks completely factory where all the IFS stuff would have been. Also has the tube through the frame where the shackles are for the front leaf springs looks stock. Is it possible with having a build take of December 1985 but a title date of 86 that it came factory with a solid axle up front?

One more concern I am having is the shackle length. The rears are 7-1/2" center to center and the front is 6-1/4" center to center. I noticed the rear sits a little higher then the front but I can change that easy enough. My question is, are these shackles to long? This is mostly going to be a toy and will see very little street time.

I am also trying to figure out what springs I have under it. Appears to be stock length so I am not really sure. It appears that the front hanger has been spaced down by 2"x3" tube to give it a little more lift. The front is spring over with hi-stear. If possible I would like to get rid of the shackles and blocks for all spring lift. I am planning on only running 35's so I don't really need a whole lot. Although I have toyed around with the idea of putting my 38.5's on it. What are your thoughts?

Can anyone give me any answers to what I am looking at here?

Square driveshafts ftw
What's up with the front shackles being wider then the springs and being spaced with nuts??
Also I'd just move the shackles into the other hole and if you still have enough lift then lose the block
Shorter shackles will make it drive nicer

Yeah such a nice drive shaft someone made. Lol. Going to build a new one soon. Would really like to get rid of the shackles and blocks all together and do a full spring lift. Would like to stay around 7" to be able to clear my 38.5s if I decide to put them on. Other option would be able to clear my 35's bare minimum. Don't mind the shocks either. Those are going to done after I figure out my springs.

If you talking about buying new springs I'd go with no blocks and like a 4" shackle
And ya I giggled at the rear shocks

Holy fukin blocks. Ditch those and look up Chevy 62 swap. Way better setup for the rear.

The front is definitely not stock. And the welds on the front cross member looks scary.

The shackle on the front is spaced with those nuts and wider than the springs because the builder cheaped out when they did it. The frame has that angle there and a set of stock shackles have a offset to them. You can buy the through the frame busing for cheap but the right shackles cost a bit more. They didn't even mod the body mount to clear the shackle.

Do some trimming to make your tires fit.

As for the wires, Not sure why you want to worry about them because they were most likely for the EFI which you don't have anymore...unless you are going to be smart and put EFI back in.

Frame turns out to be an 84-85 and they swapped on an 85 body. The lowered the front hangers by welding in some square tubing which has to be undone. I will be building my own hanger.

Yes, I have a lot of undoing to do and re-fabbing. I am looking at the 63"/ruf setup right now or the f150 rear/ruf. Just trying to figure out if I'm going to run 35's or 38.5's before I decide what I am going to do for lift. I would like to keep it as low as possible but still be able to flex. Plan to do some trimming as well.

I have a feeling I'm going to end up parting out my 85 4runner unless I can find a buyer soon. I have a bunch of good parts that you might be interested in. Check out my sale thread and maybe we can work a deal on parts for your rig.

The way it sets it's on 35" MTR's but I had 37" creepy crawlers under it before I picked up the MTR's. The only reason I switched tires is that the creepy's were not worth a shit in the cold/snow to soft of a compound tire.

If I had the extra money laying around I would totally buy the whole thing. Unfortunately after buying my race buggy I am tapped out from buying anything major. I would most definitely be interested in parts though. I have a 14b ff I could trade for some parts. I know your looking for a d60 but I also have a matching d44 if your interested in that. Let me know when you are to the point of parting it out and I will let you know what I am interested in.
