I have two (2) internal 56K Winmodems that I won't ever use again, as they're not compatible with Linux (I have been on Linux for ~5 yrs. and will never switch back to Microsoft). I also have a Zip 100 drive. They're free to anyone who wants them. I'm located in Allendale, just west of Grand Rapids.
If they're not gone in a week, I'll probably pitch them.
The modems are from a Micron & HP PC, respectively. They'll work in basically any Windows-based PC. Winmodems use Microsoft software to control them (laymen's terms). Linux requires a different type of modem where the hardware is independent of the software.
Linux is a free operating system based on the Unix platform. It's user-friendly, and looks a lot like Windows. However, the benefits over Windows in a nutshell are:
Secure operating system without all the security holes that Microsoft has. I don't have anti-virus software, and I'm not worried about getting viruses.
It's FREE. Microsoft's licensing fees are insance, so many schools, governments, etc. are switching to Linux to save HUGE money.
It's based on Open Source software. Instead of one company (e.g. - Microsoft) creating all the software and protecting the secrecy of the code, Open Source enhancements can be submitted by anyone, and offered to the rest of the Linux community after they have been approved & tested.
Anyone? These are going in the garbage Sunday night for Monday pick-up. Surely someone needs a backup modem in case theirs gets fried by lightning or somehting...
Is that zip drive an internal or an external? How much to box and throw in the mail? I'll cover the costs and maybe even throw in enough for a 6pk if your old enough... HAHAHA
I'm up in Bay City.... 48706 Thanks
It's an internal zip drive. They're yours just for the cost of shipping if you want them. Shoot me a PM if you do. BTW, it won't be too long before I'll be twice as old enough to drink. :tonka:
I'll wait another week before scrapping them based on Budman's comments. If anyone wants them, they're still up for grabs.
