look into the shift motor, its a fairly comon problem. same thing happened to me. it has a circuit bored on it so the switches will click and try to send the message but the motor wont shift

Im not positive of it, but didnt the electronic shift t-case s-10s still use a NP231, if so maybe there is Ice jamming up the linkage to the shift motor...
if you did not figure it out my guess would be the vacume acutator under the battery. My 1996 did the same thing and the acutator was shot. I replaced it and it works like a champ now.

aight, well when my acutator went out, the 4x4 light flashed on the dash to tell me, "Hey, don't do anything stupid, you don't have 4x4" I checked the motor, fuses, etc and all was good. I replaced the acutator, light came on steady and I had 4x4.

the light will flash untill then axle and t case are ingaged, but tonka has 2 lights flashing where you only had 1 im assuming. i had the same exact thing as tonka, where it flashed both high and low because it couldnt get anything to work.
