Car and Driver / Drummond Island editorial is out. May 2008
As I am not a subscriber, I have yet to see it. (I just got an e-mail at work from our Communications Manager asking if that was me in the Editorial)
So how bad is it?

I'm not surprised; but it would have been good for them to take the high ground and tried to educate rather than try and discredit GL.

In the end, the easy access to 4x4/AWD vehicles is probably the biggest risk to ORV routes because between attitudes of people like shown in their reply and the dolts that ripped up the wetlands on DI and got jail time.

welcome to my world. I grew up for the most part around the ass hats that started that mag and their vermin children. punk kids who used to drive Ferrari's to school on daddys dime. they really have such an elitiest attitude they could careless what or who they hurt.

They kind of echo the thoughts most of us (at least me) have thou in their reply. Its a road, why can't I drive on it? I'm not eroding anything...watch what one wet season/winter storm does to the woods/trails!? Commercial....a club is commercial? taking pictures is commercial? paying to have someone guide you around is commercial?

But when it comes down to following the exact DNR rules, they screwed up. Sure did. Being a national (international) magazine, they should cross their I's and dot their T's! They should take the high ground on everything, permission from locals, state, etc...

Is this the article
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparison_test/crossovers_and_suvs/mud_puppies_comparison_test

I've never been to Drummond Island. So this may sound stupid.. But from the 10pics what is illegal as I don't know exactlly where these pics where taken. The road just looks like a early spring water over a 2 track.. Is that illegal?? OR is it the spot they are at that is illegal?? As far as driving on the beach.. Again I don't wanna sound stupid just wanna get informed. Is there signs that make it illegal to drive on the beach there?? Or is it illegal?? I'm just asking .. Don't bite my head off.

Read thru this thread.

Bottom line, you need to know the laws in Michigan. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "ignorance is no excuse for the law". Well, this is it. There are closed areas on Drummond Island and the local who guided them around took them there. It's not that they really did anything that was harmful but it gives the unknowing person the impression that they can drive wherever they want. The other thread will give you a lot of insight without me retyping it all.

I think that is a terrible response.... they could have simply said we did not do enough research into where we were going and should have taken a better look at things.

Something that simple woul dhave been a much better response... instead he sounds like a jack @$$

I don't know, i've met quite a few the C&D people over the years, or at least ones that started at C&D, they've all been really nice people.

Did they let me drive their fancy test cars, no, did they let me look, yes.

Don't know this Ed guy though. I have a feeling he is just clueless on the subject and and thinks he needs to stick up to a certain image.

I have subscribed to C&D for @ 10 years. I really didn't think his response was all that bad compared to what I have seen in the past. There is usually a lot of sarcasm laced in them. I do think they should have treated the issue with a little more sensitivity though.

If you look further in the issue there is a pic of a Toyota 4x4 with a tire up on one of the participant's POS racecars. I think its page 119 in the article about the 24 Hrs. Of Lemons. I beleive that is 88YJ's. I haven't had a chance to email him about it to confirm yet.
