I bought this 86 4runner in feb 2008 and never did a build thread for it. So here it is when I bought it.
I started the same way most do ,add a bunch of bolt on stuff :sonicjay:
I added a bumper and winch, a soft top sliders and some super sweet dick cepek dc1 's with pro comp 31" tires. It looks gay now to me but I thought it was cool then:sonicjay:
I wheeled it like this for a little while then I thought ,I will improve it by.........wait for it. Bigger tires!:sonicjay: Yep 35" boggers. There is nothing a tired 280k 22re engine would like more than a set of boggers.
They actually worked pretty good and I kept them for a bit. I found some more $ and added some dual cases with a twinstick and a hand throttle for the technical stuff. I love this mod!
I wanted to make it perform better and decided not to worry about the streetablity as much so I did a solid axle swap and longer rear springs. And some 30 spline cryo axles in place of the stock birfields.
I rocked it like this for a while. It wheeled well off road and was surprising on road.
It had it's limitations :sonicjay:
I did 5.29 gears and a spool in the rear . That was a huge difference. Then I wanted bigger tires and something that wont dig as much so...... I got these.
Some 39.5 Pitbull Rockers and some Trailworthy Fab beadlocks
I cut the living crap out of the fenders and firewall to clear these. I also took off the gay fender flares. I bent some tubing to protect the sides and welded them on . I also needed some support for my huge penor stinger ,so it doesn't flex when I'm hanging off it for the stinger sexy pics:sonicjay: so i welded some tubes to the frame for it also.
I added some onboard air useing my air conditioning compresser.
I wanted something different than the tube doors so I thought why not cut up your perfect factory doors with power windows. So I did.
All done
They turned out nice , and my hair can blow in the wind on those nice summer nights.:thumb:
Then it rained, and I am delicate so I took the cut out section and made some inserts with snap in windows .
I am very happy with what my truck does offroad now except I was sick of dargging it's ass over every obstacle. So I bobbed the back 12" it was a major pain but well worth it in departure angles. And I was able to fix my shackle angle since I had to move the shackles to clear the tailgate .
The start
no turning back now
almost done
done
opening tailgate too!
before
after
It wheels so much better now!
Well that's about all for now. I am going to do a hydro assist and lunchbox lock sometime soon . I have a 4.3 vortec engine to install too . I just need some time and $ for both .
