lookin at a 99 1500 with 143K 318, auto, anyone know of any common problems, or things i should be looking into? the only thing im really concerned about drive train wise is the 46re trans, heard their hit and miss. and their problem is they dont flow fluid well so they get hot real fast????

its a sport model is that kinda like chevys z71 package? limited slip rear, skid plates etc...

Mine rusted like crazy. I put a trans in mine at 60K miles. THey do not have a fuel line return, so if you run low on gas like all the time, the pump overheats and they wear out. The Front unit bearings can go out, but are easy to replace, buy them on ebay, not dealer because theyll be half the $. Axles good. Center axle disconect never gave me any trouble at all. Dist. cap is a real bitch to replace, but not inpossible, you need a stubby screw driver to unscew it. Engine had low oil pressure at 130K miles, so i did the old slip n slide with new bearings and oil pump, which kept pressure up for like a week. All and all, I'd buy my old one back which was a 96 if i could. I loved that truck.

if your worried about the tranny run a after market trans cooler. unit bears are a pain in the ass, but DO NOT buy ones off ebay, auto zone, advance auto. go napa get a lift time you will save your self some cash in the long run if your gonna keep it longer then a year. just remember the you can only run atf +4 in the trans, thats where alot of people have trouble. the sport package is mostly a appearance package

I had a 99 Sport with the 360. Bought it with 36k on it and sold with 45k on it. It was a sharp looking truck but seemed like one little thing after another. I did find it weird that I had to replace a wheel bearing with that low of miles. I also had to replace the heads. I don't recall everything about it but I do remember when ordering certain stuff the 99-01 (I think those are the years) Sports were the bastard child of parts. Mine was not limited slip/posi. I'm thinking my truck was just a lemon though.

my dads got a 01 with the same trans and knock on wood never have had to do any work to it (245k) the only thing with that truck is the hubs. my gramps has a 98 2500 sport 318 and the only problem with that is very sloppy steering it has 180k on it
hope this helps

known? really? my last 2nd gen had 253k miles with now problems, my 99 had 198 with no problems my 98 no problems. my uncles 96 same thing no problems. i know of 1 guy to have trouble and its do to changing the intake and over torquing the intake bolts as are 98% of problems. thats not chryslers fault.....

again its from over torquing the intake bolts. the magnum motors do have trouble with the belly pan gasket on the bottom of the intake. there is a tsb on the gasket.
