I have brake concern where the rear is engaging to quick. I am not that familiar with the Jeep system. This 1994 YJ does have Anti-lock, but the light has been on for at least a year. I have no way to read the code. In the past the Jeep would do this but it was only after I towed the vehicle behind the motorhome. The first time you hit the brake the rear would lock up and then it seemed to be fine after that.
It this just an adjustment concern, or do I have a concern with the proportion valve?
I hoping there is just a simple fix, like an adjustment.
sounds like your towed Jeep is getting moisture in the the brakes and its coating the insides. when you first hit the brakes does it grab like its stopping from 60mph and screechs to a halt? if so then your fighting the moisture.
Yes, it does. How do I get rid of it and fix the darn thing. It has gotten the the point that it does it ALL the time now. Makes for a nail biting ride in the snowy weather. Would a flush work?
I guess you have to figure out why the water is filling up in your brakes. if its mist being thrown up from the tires or condinsation. on our fork trucks at work if we leave them out in the rain they do it without being driven. so consider removing a piece just big enough from the backing plates to route an air hose into the drum, that way you can blow them out for a few minutes after you get where you going.
I would also look at how your drums seal to the backing plates, if the rain sealing lip isn't there it could be the problem, are all rubber plugs in the backing plates? its just a matter of nailing down the source of water.
For future reference: You can read the trouble codes by turning the key forward 3 times, leaving it in the accessory position on the third time. Count the "check engine" flashes. The codes are listed in Haynes & Chiltons manuals.
This is also the same for My woman's 2002 dakota. maybe all Mopars?

Thats what I like to hear! I think I'll take the drums off this weekend and inspect them. I bought it used and it has 149,000 on it. May be orginal.
I knew that the key would check the abs codes. If I could get that done, it would be great. Might be a simple adjustment of a wheel speed sensor. I did clean all the electrical connections to the controller. Last year it would work on snowy days only! The light would go off and it would work for few days.
Sticky, sticky. Check your axle seals to be safe. I had a leaking seal screw up the ABS on my Ram a few years ago. Caused the brakes to grab suddenly when barely touching the pedal and the ABS to kick in under 5 mph (which it shouldn't do). It wasn't leaking enough to notice from outside the truck. Found it after pullng stuff apart.
I'll get into this on the weekend. I did do three HARD reverese stops on the way out of the drive way... Can't say I see any real difference.... but there might be some.
i think im having the same problem right now, i was squealing the tires stoping at a red light this morning. would it help if i took the drum off and sprayed everything with brake cleaner?
I took them apart today. Drums were rusted on. One side had a frozen adjuster. Shoes were fine. I cleaned it and reassembled. Adjusted it on the loose side. Stops great. While I was in there I adjusted the Wheel sensor and cleared the ABS codes, just in case it might be that. ABS light came right back on. The Chilton's say 1.1mm clearance, but that is the old sensor. It doesn't give a clearance for the newer version. I adjusted it to the old style (which wasn't much movement).
