my current 99' xlt 5.4 4x4 extended cab is being grumpy. It does have 300k miles. but runs pretty good (minor lifter/cam tick). trans rebuilt, and shifts good. once warm tick goes away.

HOWEVER, I jump started it as it sat for a month or so and the battery was dead. since I did that I have had all sorts of problems.

First it started with the radio not working in reverse or drive and coming back on in park or nuetral. AND, the dash lights wont shut off!? the warning lights stay on after ignition off and key out (they are dimmer than when ignition on but still on) the radio also stays on.

Today after having to jump it again (sat for weeks) then when running in park the start starts trying to start again. sounds terrible. when in drive or reverse it quits trying but put it back in park and starter fires! THEN I drove it three miles and my drivers window tried to automatically roll down twice without being asked to. WTF?! Got him put it in park and start starts grinding again.

LOL... what is going on!? its making me crazy.

Exactly... My 04 was doing all kinds of crazy shit. Voltmeter was still showing decent power, and the idiot light wasn't on, but stereo would work, then not work, no dash lights, but heat and headlights, no gauges, then they'd work... Finally I pulled the alternator and took it into a rebuilders, he pulled it apart while I was there and the brushes were worn clean through the commutator... Rebuilt it for under $150...

Might be something to check anyway...

I wasn't trying to be an Ass earlier, just sounded like the car from Stephen Kings "Christine"...

So... after charging all night (and part of the morning, as I forgot to take it off, and had the wife take it off) I get home and couldnt find my meter (just moved into house, and had to move toolbox out of the way to get truck in garage).

So I opened the door and dome light turned on. closed it and it turned off. good start. theft light flashing "normally". So I turned key on, and radio came on and wipers. cool. Started it. all still working.

then I put it in drive. GUESS WHAT!? The radio and dome light and wipers stayed on!!! HOLY CRAP!?

So, I pulled off wiper cowl and saw a bunch of white household grade sealant that was cracked and seperated from steal and window. Hummm...

So, the only thing not working at this point that worked a few weeks ago was the blower motor. that doesnt turn on at all right now. :( other than that everything works!

So is it that the GEM is drying up more and more or a good charge helped it? not sure still... LOL. still will pull gem and fuse panel apart and check for corosion and clean them up and put some dielectric grease and then get wind sheild replaced professionally!

I am sure it is the gem drying out, maybe you got lucky and didn't do any permanant damage to it. Lay under the dash with the doors closed and have someone hit the windshield with a garden hose, you will see it run in and drip right on the back of the gem module/fuse box.
