Since the only reasonably priced ammo I have seen lately is .17 HMR I'm considering buying something that will shoot it. What should I buy? I'd like something semi auto but I've read that it isn't recommended.

Does anyone have one that they would like to sell or any recommendations on What I should buy? I'd like to stay on the cheap side maybe $250 at most. Thanks in advance for any help.

Semi auto .17 HMR pretty much no longer exists. I've never heard a definite reason as to why, but you won't find one.

Savage is usually the way to go. They feel good, the bolts aren't sticky like the Marlins can be, adjustable trigger, lots of options starting from about $250 new.

But as a heads up for anyone thinking about a .17 for hunting, or more than just "Its all thats available." There is a new .17 Winchester Super Mag that will be hitting the market this year. Savage is making a rifle called the B-Mag that will be the first to be feeding this ammo. MSRP is $350 for the rifle, ammo is said to be about the same as the HMR.

Still a rimfire, but is going to be reaching up to 3,000 FPS, and will also be able to use a 25gr bullet (~2,600 FPS) Savage rep told me there is very little drop to 200 yards.

i had a 93 savage in 17 hmr with a 4-12x 50 and the fun cheep guns . im a big fan of savages bolt actions. i ran the v tip rounds in 17g . used it from right up close to around 150 yard with out a problem

as far as i know the reason the semi auto would miss fire
round had a chance of going off in the mag

If I could find any 22lr I wouldn't be considering it as much. I haven't seen any at a store in a couple months. I'm not buying private party and paying more. I'd rather spend the money for something that is worth the amount I pay.

It could also be that I want an excuse to buy another gun.

I figured that much its a win/win situation. You can't go wrong with the savage gun. I've shot them all Marlin Ruger and Remington. I own the Savage and used it for woodchuckin and prairie dogs out west. I like the higher end guns so I bought a Remington 504t . While it is worth more than double it doesn't shoot any better.
I would go stainless if your budget will allow.

Volquartsen makes semi-auto .17hmr's, but they aren't cheap. The action they use is based off of a Ruger 10/22, so it's extremely simple to work on.

If you just want a decent bolt gun, like mentioned... the Savage 93r17 is hard to beat. If you get the accutrigger model, you can get them to shoot amazing out of the box. If you find a non-accutrigger model (cheaper) you can do a simple sear replacement and get the trigger pull way down and make them nail drivers. I installed a Rifle Basix sear in a friends 93r, and got the trigger pull down to 17oz...a little light for a hunting rifle, but great for a target gun.

If I was to buy another 17hmr, I'd go with a CZ. http://cz-usa.com/products/view/CZ455VarmintThumbholeSSTFluted/

This one is beyond the budget but I think they make a polymer stock basic model that might be found cheaper. I have a savage 93v17 non-accutrigger. Its okay, but it feels like the action is make of sheet metal. Even with a thousand rounds through it, I can still feel the machine marks as I send the bolt home. Great for a budget gun, as it is accurate, but I desire something more.

I have a Savage, very accurate but it is the most boring firearm I have ever shot. I basically mounted the scope sighted it in and shot it one other time. It sits in the gun cabinet. What really sucks is when the .17HMR came out ammo was $10 a box, they said it would eventually get down to the $4~5 per box price of the .22WMR. Unforunatly the .22WMR ammo is now $12~14 per box same as the .17.

Another vote for a savage 93. Uses same magazines as the 93 .22 mag, and mine was stupid accurate. Laminated stock, 21ish inch bull barrel, cheapo scope, no accutrigger. bought it years ago for under 200 bucks.

New ones have been recently advertised for in the 200-250 range. Within the past two months recent, either dunham's or gander mountain. Gander's online site says instock no scope for 250 bucks, regular priced.

Lots of guys don't like the composite stocks base savages come with. several I have shot have been filled with sand and epoxied down to give the rifle better balance. Yes, you have to dig the expando foam out, but IMO it was totally worth it.

Semi-autos were short lived in this caliber because of accidental discharge and poor feeding due to the cartridge shape, if i remember correctly.
