This is a serious question.

Found out in the ER that I was allergic to Anapsine, I started having uncontrolled movements. The wife asked "what are you doing" I said I'm not driving, as I grabbed the bedrails and started shaking the hell out of the bed. Almost knocked the bed on it's side while she was screaming in the hall for a doctor to come quick. He gave me an injection, I'm assuming it was benadryl, and I fell over dead for 6 hours. That was fun.

Oh and when you said "I've seen the light" were you referring to the OR room lights before you went under or something else you saw after your heart had been stopped for a few minutes?

If it was the something else... Do you remember anything other than that bright light?

I brought this topic up for discussion simply because I recently read a book on this very topic that was written by a Harvard neurosurgeon that went through it himself and came back with one hell of a story for supposedly being brain dead for a week. He had the classic scientific/logical take on what people saw in these situations until it happened to him. He wrote this book to try and get the message out about what he saw and how much it changed his life. It just so happens that what he describes in this book locks in with what I've accepted as hardwired understanding in my own soul and why I have never been able to accept wholeheartedly any form of organized religion.

When I was four (too young for any sort of real memory of the events other than a "two second video clip" of an oxygen mask placed on my face and the smell of the plastic it was made of) I was rushed to the hospital by my pediatrician (personally... didn't call an ambulance. Picked me up and as he ran to his car told my Mom to get in hers and follow as close as she could no matter what traffic laws she broke) where his diagnosis of bacterial meningitis was confirmed and I slipped into a coma that lasted a week. Another child of the same age was brought in that day of the exact same thing and died within hours of arrival (my Mom found this out AFTER I came out of the coma).

I have never been able to accept any form of organized religion in my life because no matter what... I feel my entire mind reject anything I've ever seen in any sort of church. I can't trust the Bible because of the fact that it was written by man and it's a known fact that "political" figures throughout history have removed parts to fit their own purposes. I've tried a lot of churches because I KNOW deep down that the touch of a being so far superior to ourselves can be seen in everything around us on a daily basis but not one of them has ever felt right. The touch of the greatest engineer we have ever witnessed the work of is around us at all times. I just can't sit there and say that I know because some book or someone said so. Modern organized religion reeks of the arrogance of Man when we know damn well that we don't know shit about shit.

But anyway... That neurosurgeon's account of what he experienced hit me on a level I never thought possible and I wonder if I saw something myself during that week of coma when I was too young to remember now.

If anyone reading any of this has had an experience such as this please share your story and what you saw. The greatest question of mankind is "What comes after we die?"

By the way... Here's the info on the book.

They had me on a coroners table, because they were sure I wasn't going to make it. I was the 6th person on this planet to have this particular surgery, 2 lived. The light, was the surgical light they kept over top of me because my heart was failing. Until my wife pointed out that my internal hardware was fist fighting with the external hardware. Sometimes women are worth something....

I had a reaction to a dose of penicillen for an infection I had in a tooth. I was starting to feel real itchy all over and went back into the hotel room where we were staying at. I told my wife what was happening and asked her to call an ambulance.
I sat down on the couch, was feeling dizzy by now. I got thirsty and got up to get a drink of water. I walked to the sink got a glass and took a drink. I put the glass down and then I got up off the floor and thought who hit me.
I cracked my cheek bone on the concrete floor and had a nice gash and blood. I crawled back to the couch and waited for the ambulance.
They showed up and gave me a shot of benedryl and then everything went black. I was in and out of it.
Next thing I see was a light(doctors flashlight)I was there but not, then everything began to spin.
Then I hear somebody say Big Poke!
I felt like somebody stabbed me in my thigh. I look over and the doc is pulling out a huge needle from my leg. I was told it was a shot of efenepran.
The doctor told my wife they almost lost me.

I would have to disagree. Your physical body will turn to dust but I believe your soul lives on.
There have been alot of people that have told very similar stories of what happen to them during a near death experiences.
If it is something that the mind does during the time out, then why is it that so many people have such similar experiences?
My thinking is there has to be some sort of connection.

was around 3 or 4 years old one of those old metal tv antennas fell off our roof and broke. My older brother grabbed a couple of the broken rods and was acting like he was smoking a cig so I did the same, I ended up falling face first and the metal rod went threw my mouth and into my brain. I went out on the way to hospital and almost died due to loss of blood and complications from the rod in my brain. Shit haunts me to this day, No one in my family has said a word about it in over 28 years. I spent a unknown amount of time in the ccu. icu. I do remember the ride in my moms car and telling her how much it hurt then boom I was out. I woke up in the hospital and didnt remember a thing for a long time.

There are plenty of people that attempt to explain away somebody elses life after death experience. But to the person that it happened to, it was real to them. Just as the brain doctor did. His experience was real to him and who can tell him that what he experienced was not real? He could tell you what is a dream and what is not by his experience.
I read a book called, "Heaven is For Real", by Todd Burpo.
Its a story of a 4 year old boy and his experience of going to heaven and back.
It is a very compelling and convincing book.

Let's be honest. It's not like you're arguing with an ignorant fool when it comes to the bible. I have read it, studied it, had tests on it, etc. throughout 6 years of Catholic school.

There are some decent lessons on how to live life in there, but other than that it's a big crock of shit.
I think we've identified the problem. Sometimes it's not the course content that's the problem, it's the instructor.

SS you might as well quit. NO-ONE knows more about ANYTHING than these guys. Neuroscientist? Nah... they know more. I studied medicine for too many years and practice it for my living and agree that when we shut our minds to the possibility of solutions beyond our knowledge, perception we quit growing and therefore quit advancing. I am undoubtedly a Christian but believe that much of what is taught in the Church is opinion and often a biased one. However that doesn't mean it isn't founded in truth. Same as these experiences. Simply difficult to understand how anyone who has witnessed a birth can't believe there isn't something more than we comprehend, some type of miracle they have witnessed. But, to each his own.

Two of my heart catheterizations, I had a great big Hawaiian guy come in the room, with an apron on like a nail pouch. After a cath, you have to lay completely still, so as not to dislodge any clots, or move the sheathes. The sheathes are like manual choke cable housing about 18" long.

It's this big dudes job to dip his fingers in a powder that is made of seaweed and some antibiotic, plus anti coagulant. He had to hold pressure on the sheathes for 15 minutes, and then pull the sheathes out one at a time the left had 3 right side had 2. He had to powder his finger tips, and apply hand pressure for one hour per side, after taking the sheathes out. You could feel the sheathes rubbing together as he slid them out one by one. Pain was so bad I passed out for 15-20 minutes. After one side, he had to take 2 out of the other, and hold pressure for an hour there. After that, I couldn't move my legs for 8 hours.

For BlooMule:

"I know there will be people who will seek to invalidate my experience anyhow, and many will discount it out of court, because of a refusal to believe that what I underwent could possibly be "scientific"-could possibly be anything more than a crazy, feverish dream.
But I know better. And both for the sake of those here on Earth and those I met beyond this realm, I see it as my duty - both as a scientist and hence a seeker of truth, and as a doctor devoted to helping people - to make it known to as many people as I can that what I underwent is true, and real, and of stunning importance. Not just to me, but to all of us."

Read the book. The man was not only more set in his beliefs (which were the same as yours) but also holds more knowledge on what you're trying to use as evidence in your argument than every member of this board combined.

To convince me, you need empirical evidence, which can be validated through a scientific test with a control group. Results must be repeatable by anyone with access to the same or largely similar subjects and methods.

In other words, it must be observable by an unbiased outside source, or be proven mathematically with repeatable results.

THAT is how science works, not just using subjective data that can be influenced by outside sources.

i.e., one may not believe a particular myth, but if the myth permeates a culture deeply enough it an surface.

So, in conclusion- if belief in life after death makes you a happier living person, I'm good with that. Myself, I am ok with the concept that 'dead is dead', and I enjoy the experiences in life just fine with that viewpoint.

Aren't you at least a little curious as to what experience could've possibly have changed the opinion of one of the world's foremost authorities on neuroscience and the brain from one identical to yours to the belief in it?

Bingo!

A guy I used to hang with was 'dead' for 7 minutes during a triple bypass. He saw no lights, or dead relatives, or saviors, he said he was being chased by an enourmous spinning mud ball. Can't get anymore info from him because his heart did finally give out a few years ago. All I know is that for him- all the life after death stuff was 'Bullshit'.

Don't get too upset with me- this forum is all about opinions. If life after death comforts you and fits wih your beliefs, I'm not going to tell you you are wrong, I'm just explaining why it doesn't work for me. In a nutshell, it raises more contradictions than anything else. For one, if life after death exists, then why can't the dead communicate with us in a clear manner?

For me, the concept of death meaning the end of my existence and consciousness is easier to accept. It allows me to appreciate my life more and try to make the most of it rather than waiting to go to a 'better place'.

My brother was in a very bad car accident about 20 years ago. Driving 60mph after a late shift, falls asleep at wheel, hits oncoming car. car was smashed like a tin can. Jaws of life to get him out. He was in a coma for a couple of weeks. About a day before coming out of the coma he had a verbal "conversation" with an angel while my folks were in the room. Didn't open his eyes or anything, just started talking. Then another day passed and he miraculously became conscious.
