A series of six statewide meetings has been set for public review of the 2006 State Forest Management Plan, according to the Department of Natural Resources. The plan is part of the DNR's effort to maintain its forest certification. The DNR was certified in forest management by two independent, third-party organizations earlier this year, signifying that the department manages the state forests in an ecologically sound and sustainable way.
The draft plan is available starting today on the DNR's Web site at http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-30301_39170-144977--,00.html
The public meetings are scheduled for:
  • Monday, Aug. 14, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Don H. Bottum University Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Cisler Center at Lake Superior State University located at 650 W. Easterday Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Best Western Alpine Lodge located at 833 W. Main Street in Gaylord.
  • Thursday, Aug. 17, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at McGuire's Resort located at 7880 Mackinaw Trail in Cadillac.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Grand Valley State University Eberhard Conference Center located at 301 W. Fulton Street in Grand Rapids.
  • Thursday, Aug. 24, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Eastern Michigan University Eagle Crest Resort Conference Center located at 1275 S. Huron Street in Ypsilanti.
"These public meetings will give citizens a chance to comment on the state forest management plan in each key region of the state," said DNR Forest, Mineral and Fire Management Chief Lynne Boyd. "Because forest management touches on many aspects of the ecosystem, from fisheries to wildlife to human uses, it is important that a good cross-section of interested persons attend and voice their views on the plan. Public input is a critical part of the process." In addition to the above public meetings there will be a stakeholder meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Lansing Center located at 333 E. Michigan Avenue in downtown Lansing. Persons unable to attend the public meetings will be able to provide comments via e-mail at dnr-2006sfmp@michigan.gov. Written comments also can be mailed to the Forest, Mineral and Fire Management Division, P.O. Box 30452, Lansing, MI 48909-7952.
